ABUJA, - The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) after a long meeting held today with its various members and the Federal Government in Abuja today resolved to suspend the on-going strike action. Members are to to resume with immediate effect from February 2nd, 2011.
An agreement has been reached between ASUU and the Federal Government to suspend with immediate effect the strike action the educational body embarked upon exactly 60 days ago on December 5th, 2011.
ASUU had been on strike over the Federal Government's non implementation of the agreements it reached with the union in 2009 with demands for increased funding for universities as well as increased wages and retirement age for members from 65 to 70 years as main priorities.
"Government will immediately stimulate the process with the sum of 400billion naira in the next three years. These interventions will be based on identified prioritized needs,” AASU President, Prof.Ukachukwu Awuzie said.
Prof.Ukachukwu Awuzie further dislosed that the FG has agreed to improve the educational budgetary allocation as demanded by the union.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Senate last week passed a law which increased the retirement age for lecturers to 70.
The union embarked upon the strike action over the Federal Government's non implementation of the agreements it reached with the union in 2009.
