Scholarship Description
Harry Frederick Oppenheimer was a noted South African businessman, philanthropist, and opponent of apartheid. In 1993 he endowed the Oppenheimer Fund at Oxford University. The Fund promotes links between the University of Oxford and South African Universities. It does this by supporting academic exchanges between Oxford and South Africa, and assisting students ordinarily resident in South Africa wishing to pursue graduate study at Oxford.
Eligibility
The Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships are open to applicants who are ordinarily resident in South Africa applying to start any new degree bearing course, with the exception of PGCert and PGDip courses, at the University of Oxford. Applicants should be intending to return to South Africa following their studies.

Awards are usually made for the full duration of a student’s fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.
Scholarship benefits
Scholarship recipients will receive a financial support grant of up to £6500 of fees or living costs.
The Oppenheimer Fund also supports academic exchanges between Oxford and South Africa. These are available to academic members of staff at Oxford and all South African universities. The maximum level of grants is currently up to £1100 per month for subsistence for those going to South Africa or £1300 for those coming to Oxford. Additionally, up to £700 may be given to assist with the cost of travel between Oxford and South Africa.
Method of Application
Apply at the same time as you apply to Oxford by selecting Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships in the Funding Section of the University's Graduate Application Form.
In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit your application for graduate study by the relevant January deadline, and you must have secured a place on your chosen programme of study by the expected final decision date (13 March 2013). Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field, are not eligible for scholarship consideration.
If you do not apply in full by the deadline, you will not be considered for the Scholarship, even if you have selected Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships on the Graduate Application form.
Applicants who are ‘re-routed’ (accepted onto a different programme of study to the one they originally applied for e.g. transferred from an MPhil to a DPhil or from one course to another) should contact us as soon as they are notified of the change in order to ensure that their application for a scholarship is maintained on their new programme of study.
